The cultural and economic determinants responsible for changing the traditional
weaving cultures of the Caucasus are extremely difficult to pinpoint and as
a result very little remains known about these convoluted processes. But it
is sure that these forces exerted a great influence, which often times was highly
destructive to the weaving vocabulary. The resulting losses were significant
and, eventually, purely decorative design forms replaced those with iconographic
content.
This process has most likely affected this weaving and the previous one. However,
unlike the great multitude of other examples with patterns lacking iconographic
content, the powerfully seductive combination of color and form they display
is able to overshadow their lack of traditional symbology.
