Plate
Twelve
1 foot 9 inches x 1 foot 7 inches
57.5 cm. x 45 cm.
This extremely damaged soumak bag's trellis field pattern contains a very unusual
version of the eight-pointed star within each compartment and more traditionally
designed ones in the main border. Like plate nine, small areas of silver metallic
thread highlights are present but this shared feature does not imply that they
have the same area of manufacture as their materials and dyes are very different.
Does the absence of iconographic content present here and in the next example
imply that such designs had already disappeared from their weaving cultures
or did the creators of these two visually exciting but iconoraphically mute
examples purposely choose these simple patterns?
